(INTERLOCHEN, Mich.) — Daniel Smith, 17 of Cushing, has been accepted and will attend Interlochen Arts Camp, the world’s premier summer arts program for aspiring artists grades 3 through 12. Smith, the son of Rob Smith and MJ HendersonSmith will study trombone at the Camp. In 2011, the Camp will mark its 84th season at the forefront of arts education. Daniel has been accepted into the Trombone Institute and the Wind Ensemble.
Daniel is a senior at Cushing High School. Daniel is a Varsity Scholar and National Honor Society Member. He has been selected to Boys State, Tomorrows Leaders, and RYLA. Daniel paged for Rep. Lee Denney. He is active in Student Council, attending both Basic and Advance camps, serving as class secretary for 3 years and council treasure his senior year. Daniel has received numerous band awards including: Oklahoma Small School Band Directors Association; All state member; 2011, Three superior state ratings, East Central University Honor Band 3 year member; 3 first chairs, Cimarron Valley honor band 3 year member; 1 first chair. 2 years euphonium, and Oklahoma Baptist University Honor band 3 year member; 2 first chairs. Daniel was principal trombone with the Tulsa Youth Concert Symphony for the 2010-2011 season and will play with the Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra during the 2011-2012 season
Interlochen Arts Camp attracts students, faculty and staff from all 50 U.S. states and more than 40 countries. These 3,000 artists fill Interlochen’s northwoods campus with an explosion of creativity. Student-artists learn from world-class instructors and produce hundreds of presentations each summer in dance, theatre, creative writing, visual arts, music and film.
Among the distinguished Camp alumni are Norah Jones, singer Josh Groban, opera and concert soprano Jessye Norman, conductor Loren Maazel, jazz pianist Eldar, actor Anthony Rapp, cartoonist Cathy Guisewite and many more. Approximately ten percent of the nation’s professional orchestra musicians have roots at Interlochen and the alumni community has been awarded 89 Grammy Awards.
In addition to hundreds of performances, presentations and readings by young artists, Interlochen brings leading artists and performers to the northern Michigan campus. In recent years, guest artists have included Joshua Bell, Olga Kern, Bob Dylan, Van Cliburn, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Guster, Lyle Lovett, Trace Adkins, Branford Marsalis, the Moody Blues and many more.
Daniel will attend a week of Interlochen’ Trombone Institute as well as six weeks participation in Interlochen’s Wind Ensemble. The trombone institute provides participants with solo, ensemble and chamber performance experience in both the jazz and classical idioms. The faculty works with students to strengthen their fundamental techniques while enhancing their ability to perform creatively on their instruments. This year’s trombone faculty include Thomas Riccobono, Mark Lancaster Lusk, and John Fedchock.
Thomas Riccobono is instructor of low brass at the Interlochen Arts Academy, instructor of trombone at Interlochen Arts Camp, and the artistic director/faculty of ICCA’s Adult Band Camp. He is principal trombonist with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and conducts the Encore Winds. Mark Lancaster Lusk, Professor of Trombone, joined the Penn State faculty in 1986. Prior to his appointment, he enjoyed a varied career with such diverse groups as the Woody Herman Band, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and the Chicago Contemporary Chamber Players. He continues to have an active playing career as a soloist, clinician, and freelance musician.
