(Cushing, Okla.)  Mary Barton, sponsor for the Business Professionals of America at Cushing High School has announced Cushing High School will be honoring “our heroes that are on ‘Hazardous Duty’ and are deployed overseas” by collecting items to send to them before Veterans Day.

Students are accepting items for “Freedom Boxes” during the month of October as well as the names and addresses of Cushing area soldiers who are on “Hazardous Duty” and deployed overseas. 

The following is a list of items that can be sent:

*  All kinds of snack foods in individual packs (personal size packs of crackers, cookies, Little Debbie snacks, breakfast bars, oatmeal, pop tarts, peanuts, etc.

*  Generic deodorant

*  Liquid body wash and hand sanitizer (small size)

* Individual drink mixes (to be added to bottles of water)

* Hot chocolate, tea bags, individual coffee packets

According to Blue Star Moms – snacks are the most needed at this time, but there are other items in high demand as well.

They include: 

Just Add Water – INDIVIDUAL serving sizes

Hot drinks – hot chocolate, spiced cider

Tea bags instant coffee packets

Powdered drink mixes – i.e. Propel

Crystal Light, Gatorade et.

Instant hot cereals – oatmeal, Cream of Wheat

Cup of Noodles/Top Ramen

Proteins – individual single serving size

Tuna or chicken – foil pouches/tull top cans

Beef jerky or Slim Jims

Nuts – all kinds

Protein Bars, PowerBars/ Cliff Bars, etc

Peanut butter – Jiff to Go

Clothing

White/black COTTON long athletic socks

Dark colored knit hats

White COTTON crew neck T-shirts (M or L)

Snacks INDIVIDUALLY wrapped packages

Crackers, mints, gum, candy and trail mix

Corn nuts, sunflower seeds, microwave popcorn

Granola bars (no nutri-grain), Pop Tarts

Fruit snacks, Fruit rollups, dried fruit

Personal items – TRAVEL SIZE

Powder – Gold bond, foot and baby powder

Baby wipes, hand sanitizer, lip balm/SPF, sunscreen

Dental floss, toothbrushes, toothpaste, eye drops

Shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, lotion

Disposable razors, hand and foot warmers

Batteries (preferably AA)

Stocking stuffers and entertainment

Silly Putty, Nerf/tennis balls, yo-yos, playing cards

Crossword puzzles, word search and Sudoku

Paperback books, CDs DVDs

Specialty item

Ground coffee (Peets and Starbucks are popular)

Local grocery store gift cards

Things that can’t be shipped:  glass containers, perishable foods or pork, fireworks, firearms, aerosol cans, etc.  Cannot send religious material

The list was provided by Blue Star Moms who will be sending the Freedom Boxes to the soldiers.
