Charles “Wilmer” Smith, longtime Cushing resident, passed away Monday, August 20, 2012 in the St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa at the age of 91 years.

    The son of the late Frank A. Smith and Helen Bishop Smith, Wilmer was born on July 26, 1921 in Cushing, moving to Lincoln County when he was a year old.  He received his early education in the Lone Oak and Agra Schools.

    He was united in marriage to Jennie Harris on October 16, 1943 and she preceded him in death on June 26, 1997.  He was united in marriage to Carol Bradley on April 6, 2001 and she survives him of the home.

    Wilmer was a Veteran of the United States Army, receiving his discharge as a Staff Sergeant on December 13, 1945.

    He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for three years then worked in the oil fields from 1948 until 1983. He retired after 30 years with Christensen Diamond Products Company, retiring as operations manager-Mid Continent Division.

    In 1972 Wilmer and Jennie purchased the farm where Wilmer was raised, located 5 miles south of Cushing on Kings Highway.  They built a new home in 1973 and carried on alfalfa farming and cattle raising operation in conjunction with his job with Christensen Diamond Products.

    Wilmer was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Cushing; ordained a Deacon at the Avery Baptist Church in 1948, and was currently an active Deacon of the Cushing First Baptist Church, was very involved with the Cushing Community Food Pantry.  He had been very active with the Avery Cemetery for more than 30 years and had worked part-time for the Davis Funeral Home for over 25 years.

    Wilmer and Carol enjoyed going to antique tractor shows; Wilmer had collected several antique tractors over the years and did a lot of custom tractor work.  He was always willing to help anyone that needed help and will be missed by all who knew him.

    Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home; one son, Bobby Joe Smith of Cushing; one brother, Glen Smith and his wife Barbara “Bobbie” of Agra; two step-children, Jeff Bradley and Janna Harder and her husband Tony all of South Carolina; seven step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

    In addition to his parents and wife Jennie, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Smith.

    Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 24, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the Cushing First Baptist Church with Reverend Keith Moore and Reverend Sonny Johnston officiating. 

    Burial will follow in the Avery Cemetery.

    The family will greet friends on Thursday, August 23, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. in the Floyd Family Center.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Cushing Community Food Pantry; the Avery Cemetery Association or to the Cushing First Baptist Church Building Fund.
