Over 65 Special Olympics participants came to Cushing Tuesday to show off their softball skills at the Cushing High School softball field. It is the first time Cushing has hosted any of the statewide events.
“We are thrilled to be hosting this,” said Cathy Smith, CHS teacher and event coordinator for the event. “It means so much to everyone.”
Smith said Oklahoma Special Olympics is open to those with special needs from “ages 8 – 80” although she believed the oldest signed up for this particular one was just 53.
Participants try their hand at throwing, catching. batting from a tee and base running. The event scheduled from 1 – 5 p.m. kicked off with a balloon release. Anticipation grew as blue and white balloons floated upward.
“Everyone goes home a winner,” Smith said as a smile spread across her face.
