(Cushing, Okla.) Remember the feeling of first learning to ride a bicycle on your own – without training wheels and without a parent’s balancing hand? Remember that sudden rush of freedom? Not only is bicycling fun and freeing, it’s an excellent way to get healthy exercise! Bicycling, however, is not without its risks.
The Cushing Public Library and Cushing Police Department have partnered to sponsor a bicycle skills event designed to teach bicyclists the skills they need in order to be better cyclists. By learning bike handling and traffic skills, our youth can enjoy bicycling more and reduce the chance of injury.
The 3rd Annual Bicycle Rodeo will be held June 6, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at City Hall. Bicyclists ages five through twelve are invited to attend. Participants will need a functional bicycle and a helmet to participate in the rodeo. There is no cost for participation at the rodeo.
Participants will first have their bicycles inspected and then learn and practice safe cycling skills. This will increase their enjoyment of bicycling and could some day save their lives. Parents are invited to attend and participate, while their child learns and refines these skills. There will also be a short neighborhood ride following the obstacle course! Cushing Police will accompany participants in a bicycle ride to and from the new Public Safety Center. A closing ceremony will be held at approximately 11:30 a.m. Each participant will receive a certificate for completing the Bicycle Rodeo. Additionally, four new bicycles will be given away for the Brandon Hise Memorial Bicycle Giveaway! Each participant will be entered to win and a live drawing will take place.
Please pre-register your child(ren) for the Bicycle Rodeo with the Cushing Public Library before June 5, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Registration is available at the library during normal operating hours.
For more information, contact Michael Hanes at the Cushing Public Library, 918-225-4188 or Officer Sherman or Officer Hall at the Cushing Police Department, 918-225-1212. In case of rain or inclement weather, the Bicycle Rodeo will be rescheduled for June 13, 2015.
