Lions club members were treated to some “belly talk” and a show of dummies Tuesday, as fellow Lion member, Kevin Clouse demonstrated the use of ventriloquism in his ministry. “The word ventriloquism means ‘belly talk’,” Clouse told the group.
Clouse, the pastor of The First Church of God in Cushing – and self-taught ventriloquist, has traveled all over the world using ventriloquism, magic and sometimes a bit of “clowning around” to share God’s love.
Clouse’s repertoire includes Sherlock the dog, Pops (who, according to Clouse, bears a striking resemblance to Buck Blake), Ding Dong the Do Do Bird and Whole Leigh Cow.
After a giving a brief demonstration with each of his “regular” puppets, Clouse went into the kitchen area to bring out the newest addition to his puppet family. The room rippled with laughter as Clouse dragged in his newest “dummy” – Tommy Talks Too Much – aka Lions Club president Tom Cummings.
The duo kept everyone laughing all the while getting the point across the importance of club recruitment.
“Puppets are great – especially working with children,” Clouse said. “They will remember 75 percent of what they hear from a puppet.”
And adults? Well, “they ain’t no dummies either!”
