(Stillwater, Okla.) — A Stillwater man accused of molesting a 3-year-old girl whom he was babysitting has been ordered to appear in court on Jan. 7 when he can seek a preliminary hearing on the felony charge punishable by a minimum 25-year prison term on conviction.
James Michael Maudlin, 27, has also been charged with a misdemeanor count of methamphetamine possession and remains free on $20,000 bond, court records show.
The girl’s mother, who has known Maudlin and his male roommate for a few years, said her daughter “is well-acquainted with both of them as she has been around them since she was born,” Stillwater Police Detective Sherae LeJeune wrote in an affidavit.
After the girl told her mother she had been sexually assaulted by Maudlin, who goes by the name Mikey, her mother took her to the Stillwater Medical Center emergency room on Nov. 18, the affidavit alleged.
Maudlin had agreed to babysit the girl while her mother went on a date, the affidavit alleged. When the mother called Maudlin about 11 p.m. on Nov. 17 to check on her daughter, Maudlin said she was asleep and could stay the night, the affidavit alleged.
The next morning when her mother spoke to her on the phone, the 3-year-old “sounded upset and was crying as if something was wrong,” the affidavit said. When the girl arrived home about 8:45 a.m., she was still distraught, the affidavit said.
When her mother asked her what they did and if she had fun, the girl told her that Maudlin asked her to lie down and touched her genital area, the affidavit alleged.
After a sexual assault was substantiated on Nov. 18, police went to Maudlin’s apartment where “he was trembling and appeared distressed,” the affidavit alleged.
“I asked if I could step inside to speak with him. James (Maudlin) started to close the door so I pushed it open,” and told him he was under arrest, the detective wrote in her affidavit.
Maudlin’s roommate said that he left for work about 5 a.m. so there was an approximate three-hour period in which the girl was left alone in Maudlin’s care, the detective alleged in her affidavit.
During a search of Maudlin at the jail, a torn-off corner of a sandwich bag containing suspected methamphetamine was found in his sock, the affidavit alleged.
In an interview room, the detective said, “While speaking with him, I believed he was intoxicated on some stimulant. He was acting erratic and his pupils were dilated in a well-lit room…James (Mauldlin) advised he had ingested methamphetamine at approximately 9 a.m.,” the affidavit alleged.
The detective obtained a search warrant for Maudlin’s DNA and a sexual assault biological evidence collection, which was done by a nurse at the Stillwater Medical Center and turned over to police, the affidavit said.
