Two juveniles were arrested Sunday, July 5, in connection to a fire in Memorial Park. According to reports, Cushing police and fire departments were sent to Memorial Park shortly after 2:30 p.m. Sunday after the restrooms east of the aquatic center were observed to be on fire.
Members of the Cushing fire department quickly put out the fire.
Citizens in the area were able to give responding Cushing police officers, MPO Charles Claxton and Officer Justin Sappington, a description of kids seen in the area just before the fire was spotted. Based on the tips provided, Officer Sappington began an investigation which led to the arrest of two Cushing juveniles, ages 9 and 12, who both confessed to their involvement in the arson. Both juveniles were released to their guardians.
Chief Terry Brannon said, “Without citizens having the courage to get involved, there is a high probability that we might nothave solved this case as quickly as we did. I want to commend the citizens in the park for cooperating with police, and providing us with key information which led to these arrests.”
He went on to say, “I also want to commend the investigative work by Officr Sappington and MPO Claxton. These arrests continue to reflect our commitment to help make Cushing a safe, liveable city.”
