Approximately one year ago Karen Baker found inspiration through the video, “How Great is Our God” by Louie Giglio. Six months later she found herself relying on that inspiration to pull her through one of the toughest challenges she and her family had ever faced – CANCER.
Karen said that Giglio’s video showed her the importance of accepting and embracing God’s perfect will. After viewing the video she began praying, “Dear Jesus, Your perfect will for my life is the greatest gift that you can give me.”
Little did she know that part of that “gift” would be the diagnosis of cancer. Not many would view such a diagnosis as a gift; however Karen – being a woman of great faith – has done just that.
“Cancer was one of my destinations the Lord knew about, but was furthest from my mind,” Karen said. “God – being God, and Him being one step ahead of me, prepared my heart and my mind long before they gave me the report. It’s a road I didn’t want to travel, but God assured me that it was my moment to see His mighty hand at work – and to see the glory it would bring His name.”
The cancer Karen was diagnosed with is rare and deadly. In fact, there is only one woman in the world that is called a survivor of this particular disease.
Although Karen would like to be known as the SECOND woman in the world who has conquered it, she knows that the statistics are against her.
“Whatever happens, I’ll be ok,” Karen said. “My surgeon has said I’ve received the best treatment available and that I’ve been a good patient. Staying cancer-free is up to the Lord.”
This year the Baker family will be participating on a different level at Relay for Life.
“Doug has always supported Relay for Life,” Karen said. “But this year we will BE there.”
Karen and Doug Baker will celebrate their 26th anniversary on May 21. They have three children, two boys and a girl. Doug owns and operates Baker Pharmacy located at 1022 E. Cherry in Cushing.
