Marking the 50th anniversary of the 1958 Cushing High School State Championship Football Season, many of the team members from the classes of 1959, 60 and 61 will converge on Cushing this weekend for a reunion and to celebrate their accomplishments.
Friday evening at 5:30, the group will be at CHS field house for dinner. A few members of the 1958 team will address the 2008 Tigers before the game and the ’58 team will be introduced at the game the Tigers play Friday evening Vs. Star Spencer.
Saturday morning at 8:30, everyone meets at Alumni Hall for coffee and donuts continuing on to Elks Lodge at 11:00AM for a OU vs. Texas TV game watching party. Bar B Q sandwiches will be catered by Steer Inn. At 3 PM in City Park, the City of Cushing will recognize the ’58 team at Festival in the Park. Everyone can catch the kickoff of OSU vs. Missouri at the Country Club before the 6:30 dinner. A DVD presentation created by Peggy Randall Martin will be the highlight of the evening before players share their memories and experiences.
Known to be attending from the Cushing area are John Bryant, Ron Taylor, Steve Cubbage, Bill Baker, Jerry Wattenburger and Charles Harmon. Others from throughout Oklahoma include Val Reneau, Gary Smith, Darrell Raneyand Stanley McKenney, to name a few. Darrell Wolff comes from Seattle and Erskine Moore from San Diego. Gary and Larry Harmon will be attending from Dallas.
And it is not just football players celebrating the event. Since planning meetings in August, the team has included invitations to all that share the enthusiasm. The 1958 Football Queen, Barbara Brown Wolff will attend and invitations have been extended to all that supported the effort in 1958 – the CHS band, the Cheerleaders, the Tigerette Pep Squad and the student bodies of the classes of 1959, 1969 and 1961.
