The home of DJ Duncan and second home to the Tuesday Night Music Club (TNMC) is where musicians and those with interest and appreciation gather to collectively bring out the music notes that drift throughout the air on Broadway in Cushing, Oklahoma on Tuesday nights.
Upon your arrival on Broadway, you may be greeted by Rosie, a beautiful red dog, DJ herself, Rick Reiley… or someone standing near the threshold of this beautiful old home. There’s a place for instruments, purses have their own space in the hall and some of the best coffee in town continually percolates throughout the evening at TNMC. From homemade sausage and cheese with green olives, to brownies and other goodies brought by varying sources, it’s most inviting … and everyone appreciates the hostess with the mostess, DJ Duncan.
Rick Reiley, one of just a handful of musicians that started the TNMC craze for local musicians in Cushing’s Centennial Park has just recorded a new CD entitled Mud and Bones. Rick simply put it this way – “It’s fifteen songs about life – love and stuff. And Jesus too. I hope you like it. If you don’t take two aspirins and call your doctor. There’s nothing more I can do about it at this juncture.”
Joining Rick on various tunes in this collection are: Bryon White, Gabe Marshall, John Fullbright, Jim and Chris Caloun, Bobby Driggs, Gene Collier, Emily Kathryn and Ryan Linden.
Mud And Bones was recorded in varying locations- his living room, Harmony Studios in Calflin, Kansas, and Brickhouse Studios in Cushing.
Rick stated “This not a slick production to be mistaken for a major label effort. It’s lyric driven music. If you’re not fond of words you may be better off grabbing something off the shelf at Wally World.”
To provide a bit of insight to Rick’s latest recorded collection of music, KUSH would like to share a few notes that Rick jotted down for the songs of Mud and Bones:
Goin’ to Golgotha- What it might have felt like to have been in the vocal majority on a certain day and time oh, about 2500 years ago.
Gulf Breeze- Lost love and longing for a resolution undefined.
Lay Your Body Down- Written for a dear friend who lived his life for his country, his friends and his family.
Mud and Bone- Title cut. Written at 3 a.m. on Easter morning a few years ago after realizing death comes for all of us and that cemeteries hold many lost tales. Get ready.
Dead and Gone- A happy little tune from the afterlife. Recorded too fast and with only two of three verses to make you really appreciate it when you hear the live version.
It Ain’t No Secret- Unrequited love anyone?
Mama, Mama- Feelin’ a little lost and without direction. I am able to report mama listened, shrugged her shoulders, couldn’t answer the question, then smiled and said, ”how about a nice T bone steak?’
Lift Me Up- A simple answer the to the question,’ What does Jesus do?
Dancin’ in the Kitchen- Two folks thrown together in a late night kitchen, uncertain futures, music and voila….there’s dancing.
Dim the Lights- Jazzy love number reminiscent of dark, quiet rooms.
Kansas Painter- Written after meeting artist M.T. Liggett of east central Kansas. Some great advice from this Kansas iconoclast.
The Letter- A letter from a young lady mailed to an old love with a little fear and trepidation. Will he understand?
The Things We Left Behind- Ever go through ghost towns and wonder what happened? Ever look around your old home town and wonder the same thing?
Gimme One More Chance- 20 years after being abandoned abruptly and unceremoniously on the dance floor I finally figured out what I should have said and done. Recorded with a nicely out of tune guitar with an abrupt out of tune ending. Took many takes to get this just right.
It’s A Good Day- At your age they’re all good aren’t they?
And by providing such a wonderful venue for local talents from a welcoming hostess like DJ Duncan, it’s easy to say, “why yes Rick, It’s A Good Day – when everyone counts down the days of the week till Tuesday rolls around – and music fills the air on Broadway once again!”
On Thankful Thursday episodes of the Donna and Molly Show, local music talent is showcased from 8:30 am to 10 am and many of the musicians spotlighted have at one time or another attended the TNMC.
