STILLWATER — A Texas man accused of driving 100 mph on Highway 51 while under the influence of marijuana has been ordered to appear in court with an attorney on Jan 7, 2026, on the Payne County felony charge along with a misdemeanor count of possessing a drug without a prescription.
Ryan Michael McClurg, 21, of Denton, was arrested at 2:35 pm on Nov. 2 by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Long, who is a nationally certified drug recognition expert, according to his affidavit filed last week.
McClurg could be incarcerated for six years and fined $3,500 if convicted of the two-count charge on which he was released on $2,500 cash bond on Nov. 3, court records show.
The trooper was on patrol at 2:14 pm on Nov. 2 on Highway 51 near Meridian Road when he saw a Toyota Corolla traveling 100 mph in a 65-mph speed zone, his affidavit alleged.
The trooper alleged that during a traffic stop, “As the vehicle slowed, I observed that it was still rolling when the driver abruptly shifted the transmission into park, causing the Toyota to stop violently and lurch forward before coming to rest.
“Immediately after the vehicle stopped, I saw a lit cigarette being thrown from the driver’s side window. The cigarette landed on the roadway still burning, smoking and smoldering. I instructed McClurg to exit the vehicle and pick up the burning cigarette. McClurg refused.
“I opened the driver’s door and again instructed him to exit the vehicle and pick up the object. McClurg exited the vehicle but again refused, stating that it was still burning.
“McClurg appeared disoriented, confused and unable to follow basic directions. His eyes were watery and bloodshot, and I detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the Toyota. Once inside my patrol vehicle, I could still smell the odor of marijuana emanating from McClurg.
“McClurg stated that he had smoked marijuana the day before. When asked if he was taking any medication, McClurg stated that he takes Hydroxyzine (a CNS depressant) and Pristiq (an SNRI). He stated that he last took Hydroxyzine the night prior and Pristiq approximately four hours before the stop.
“When questioned about the odor of marijuana, McClurg stated he had a ‘roach’ in his center console but claimed it ‘wasn’t really marijuana.’ I searched the vehicle and located a brown, hand-rolled cigarette with the odor of marijuana coming from it inside the center console.”
McClurg agreed to take the state’s blood test but refused a drug recognition expert evaluation “stating that he had both marijuana and medication in his system and wanted to get to jail and expedite the situation,” the affidavit alleged.
McClurg was transported to the Stillwater Medical Center for the state’s blood test before being taken to the Payne County Jail, the affidavit said.
