STILLWATER — A 55-year-old ex-convict, who said he has been staying at the Lazy L Motel in Cushing for three years as an employee, has been jailed on $25,000 bond pending a Sept. 8 court appearance at which he can seek a preliminary hearing on a charge of trafficking methamphetamine in a case investigated by the Stillwater Police Department’s Special Projects Unit.
Steven Shane Haggard, who has also been known by the alias of Dale Wayne Wadlow, told Stillwater Police Detective Josh Carson, “he sells drugs for extra money,” an affidavit alleged. “Steven said he had been to prison five different times in the past for drug-related crimes,” the affidavit said.
Haggard was arrested at 3 pm on July 15 at the Lazy L Motel where “methamphetamine, packaging material, working digital scales and pre-packaged methamphetamine were located hidden around his room along with U.S. currency in different denominations adjacent to the scales,” the detective alleged in his affidavit.
“I also found a black zippered bag sitting on the toilet containing pre-packaged methamphetamine and digital scales,” in the bathroom that Haggard was coming from when Stillwater police arrived to serve simultaneous warrants at two motel rooms, the detective alleged in his affidavit.
At the other room that was searched, a woman said that she had been living with Haggard in his room until recently, the affidavit alleged.
She said, “she was a methamphetamine addict and purchased her drugs from Steven,” in his room, the affidavit alleged. She said she only had a methamphetamine pipe in her room, which was found there by police, the affidavit alleged.
She said she rented a storage unit just north of the hotel where “Steven stored several backpacks in the unit, but (she) did not know what was inside,” the affidavit alleged. She provided a key to her storage unit and consented for police to search it, the affidavit alleged.
She “told me the book bags on the south side of the unit belonged to Steven. On a metal filing cabinet on the south side of the unit, I observed two backpacks. A black pack had identification tag on it that said ‘Steven Haggard.’
“Inside the bag I located three pistols, a black High Point 9 mm, a Taurus .380 and a Ruger 9mm, along with ammo and holsters were all found in the bag. Steven has multiple felony convictions in Oklahoma County and is unable to have firearms,” the detective alleged in his affidavit.
“A total of 28 grams of methamphetamine was seized,” the affidavit alleged.
Other individuals in the motel rooms at the time the search warrants were served were not charged in connection with the incident, court records show.
If convicted of trafficking methamphetamine, Haggard could be given a 20-year prison term and a $100,000 fine, court records show.
Haggard has a 30-year criminal record in Oklahoma County, according to state Department of Corrections records.
Haggard was convicted 21 years ago of attempted manufacture of methamphetamine and possession of the drug in Oklahoma City, for which he was originally given concurrent prison terms of 10 years and three years in 2004, both of which were modified in 2005 to 15 years of probation, DOC records show.
Haggard had also been convicted in 1996 of drug possession and given a five-year prison term of which he served four years, DOC records show. Haggard had previously been convicted in 1995 of methamphetamine possession and given a two-year prison term of which he served one year and three months, DOC records show.
