STILLWATER — A 22-year-old Cushing man, on probation for possessing a gun in Drumright after delinquent adjudication, has been accused of taking a Cushing man’s truck without permission, drunk driving, being a felon in possession of a gun, attempting to elude police, attacking his girlfriend, and driving on a suspended license.
Dakota Joe Gooch has been freed on $25,000 bond with an order to appear in court on May 5 when he can seek a preliminary hearing on a six-count charge punishable by up to 27 years’ incarceration and $20,000 in fines on conviction.
According to an affidavit by Cushing Police Officer Garvis Thomas, he was sent to an apartment at 11:02 pm on April 2 regarding a possible domestic disturbance.
Gooch’s girlfriend said that during an argument “he picked her up and squeezed her and carried her down the hallway and slammed her on the bed,” the affidavit alleged.
She said that three days before that “Gooch slapped her with an open palm and choked her,” the affidavit alleged.
She said that Gooch then went to her relative’s apartment, which he refused to leave, the affidavit alleged.
She said he “pulled out a gun from his hoody pocket and cocked the gun, and stated anyone who tries to come in and make me leave is getting shot,” the affidavit alleged.
She said he returned to her apartment and said, “I’m not leaving and if any cops come in here and try to force me, they’re getting shot,” the affidavit alleged.
She said he finally left when she threatened to call police, the affidavit alleged.
She said, “he got picked up in an older model pickup that was very loud,” the affidavit alleged.
In an ensuing police chase, “Shortly after passing Main Street, the driver deactivated the vehicle’s lights and ‘blacked out’ as a further attempt to elude officers,” the affidavit alleged.
When the truck struck a metal fence in the 1200 block of N. Norfolk, the Cushing officer pulled behind it and began giving commands to Gooch to turn off the ignition, the affidavit alleged.
“Gooch put his truck into reverse and struck the front of my patrol car causing the car door to strike me and push me backwards as well. Gooch ignored my commands and was able to get enough room to continue into the driveway before exiting the truck and running into the field,” the officer alleged in his affidavit.
“Gooch was later taken into custody by Sgt. Piatt after Gooch walked back up to the residence,” the affidavit said.
“I did a quick search of the vehicle looking for the firearm, and I located a black pistol in the center console. The gun was a semi-automatic 9 mm European American Armory pistol, sitting on top of everything inside the console making it seem it was recently placed there. The gun had a round in the chamber and 15 rounds in the magazine,” the officer alleged in his affidavit.
“Gooch denied having any guns and did not know the gun was in the truck. Gooch continued to state he ran because he was scared and did not have a license. Gooch denied getting into a disturbance or cocking the firearm,” in front of his girlfriend and her relative, the affidavit said.
Gooch refused to undergo standard field sobriety tests or take the state’s test for the presence of alcohol, the affidavit said.
The truck owner said that Gooch took it without permission and added, “he sold the firearm we located to Gooch for approximately $380,” the officer alleged in his affidavit.
