(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 20-year-old Yale man was given a 10-year prison term Tuesday followed by 10 years of probation for stabbing a man in the stomach in the 1200 block of N. Linwood Avenue in Cushing at about 1:30 am on June 30, 2023.
Xavier Ray Ramage, who pleaded guilty Tuesday, was sentenced as part of an agreement with the prosecution approved by Associate District Judge Michael Kulling, who said the amount of restitution will be determined later.
When Ramage gets out of prison, he must register as a violent offender, take an anger management course, provide a DNA sample, have a substance abuse evaluation, follow any recommendations, undergo random drug tests and enroll in Work Force, the judge ordered.
Ramage was arrested by Cushing Police Officer Cody Carpenter at 3:09 am on June 30, 2023, at Broadway and C Street in Yale where he was detained by Yale Assistant Police Chief Ken Moore, according to an affidavit.
Cushing police had been sent at about 1:30 am that day to the 1200 block of N. Linwood Ave. in Cushing on a report that “there were multiple individuals fighting in a yard and multiple vehicles left the area,” an affidavit said.
“While in route to the call location, I observe a white pickup truck fail to yield for the stop sign at the intersection of E. Main Street and N. Linwood Avenue,” that made a U-turn, pulled alongside of his police car, and said that the passenger, Levi Kraft had been stabbed, Officer Carpenter wrote in his affidavit.
“Officer Clark and I escorted the pickup truck to the Hillcrest Hospital of Cushing Emergency Room,” where the victim was actively bleeding from his stomach, Officer Carpenter wrote in his affidavit.
“I asked Kraft what happened this evening, and he stated Xavier Ramage stabbed him with a big knife, possibly a machete. Kraft was in pain and was being looked after by the ER staff,” so Officer Carpenter went back outside to talk to the pickup driver, his affidavit said.
The driver said, “he was driving back from Idabel with Xavier and J.D. Ramage in the truck with him,” when one of the Ramages was arguing on the phone with a woman and Kraft, the affidavit said. He said “they were located by Kraft and some others, and a fight started between the multiple individuals,” the affidavit said.
The driver said, “Xavier Ramage exited the truck he was in and had a knife that he indicated with his hands that was extremely long,” and took off in the truck he was driving, the affidavit said. “I observed there was a shirt with a large amount of blood on it sitting in the passenger seat where Kraft was sitting in the truck,” Officer Carpenter wrote in his affidavit.
After the Yale assistant police chief said he had Xavier Ramage in his patrol car, “I then went to the area of where the fight and stabbing occurred,” where several items were strewn in the roadway including blood and a silver chain with a cross that matched one Xavier Ramage was wearing when he was arrested on June. 1, 2023, and also matched the one on his Facebook page, Officer Carpenter wrote in his affidavit.
A witness to the stabbing told police, “Ramage jumped out of the backdoor (of the truck) and struck Kraft with the knife. (He) advised Ramage then attempted to stab other people with the knife,” the affidavit said.
“Ramage advised he had some marks on him that he wanted to be documented. I observed there was blood on the front and back of Ramage’s white t-shirt. I did not observe any marks on Ramage that could have produced the amount of blood seen. Because of the wound placement and the amount of blood that was lost by Kraft, I believed the blood on Ramage’s shirt was Kraft’s and not his,” Officer Carpenter wrote in his affidavit.
Kraft had serious injuries and was transferred to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition for surgery, the affidavit said.
In a separate case, three months ago Xavier Ramage pleaded guilty to three counts of concealing stolen property on Aug. 27, 2022 — a white box trailer, a 2010 John Deere Gator and a 2005 Dodge one-ton truck, all stolen from a Cushing couple. For those 2022 crimes, on Jan. 5, 2024, Ramage was placed on seven years’ probation, with an order to serve 30 days in jail, pay $12,588 restitution, have a substance abuse evaluation and undergo random drug tests, court records show.
