(Stillwater, Okla.) — A Stillwater man, who was 19 when he attempted to strangle a puppy and abused his girlfriend repeatedly, avoided a jury trial last week by pleading guilty to animal cruelty and three separate counts of domestic violence.
Christian Alexzavier Gwen Wright, now 20, was sentenced by District Judge Phillip Corley to three years in prison followed by seven years of probation with an order to take a 52-week batterers’ intervention program, court records show.
Wright admitted trying to strangle a puppy in his apartment on Dec. 3, 2021, hitting his girlfriend with a crutch as well as choking her on April 6, 2022, and punching her in the face on June 17, 2022, court records show.
The last attack on his girlfriend was witnessed by her mother, who said “her daughter is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend of two years, Christian Wright,” Stillwater Police Officer Justin Sappington wrote in an affidavit.
The victim “was uncooperative at first, but later stated that Wright punched her in the face on June 17, 2022,” the affidavit said.
She said, “she and Wright have been living together and in a dating relationship for approximately two years,” according to the affidavit.
