(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 37-year-old Cushing man, who was convicted of being a sex offender residing next to Agra Public Schools in 2022, has been charged with being a felon in possession of a gun in Payne County.
Colby Lee Grewell was arrested at 2:59 pm on May 8 in the parking lot of Simpson’s Gym in Cushing and jailed on $5,000 bail pending his arraignment on Tuesday.
Cushing Police Sgt. Carson Watts saw a gun “laying right beside Grewell in the seat,” of his truck, Cushing Police Officer Kyle Wright alleged in an affidavit.
Grewell said that it belonged to a relative and “he was unaware of the gun being in the vehicle due to being blind in his right eye,” the affidavit alleged.
“Grewell stated that he was not allowed to be around any firearms,” the affidavit alleged.
“Grewell stated that he had a set of earbuds in his pocket that he had found inside. Located in Grewell’s left front short pocket was a small round black container,” that had earbuds and a baggy with a white substance field-tested as methamphetamine, the affidavit alleged.
“Dispatch advised that Grewell was a convicted felon out of California and also out of Lincoln County,” the affidavit said.
When Grewell was placed on three years’ probation four months ago in Lincoln County for being a registered sex offender living next to Agra Public Schools on April 17, 2022, he admitted that he had been convicted of sexual battery in California, court records show.
If convicted of his Payne County charge of possessing a firearm after a former felony conviction, Grewell could be given a prison term ranging from one to 10 years, court records show.
