(STILLWATER, OK) – On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 1:14 p.m., Stillwater Police Department (SPD) responded to the area of 300 S. Payne in reference to a disturbance with possible shots fired at that location.
Officers arrived on scene and learned that a disturbance had occurred between residents of one house and an intoxicated male that showed up to visit a neighbor. It was reported to SPD officers that a verbal altercation ensued and the intoxicated male involved got into his vehicle to leave. The male pulled into the driveway of the neighboring house and that is when someone fired a weapon towards the pickup. All the parties involved fled the area prior to officer’s arrival.
A witness later called in to SPD that they observed a male subject in a white Chevy pickup pull into the parking lot near 500 E. Hall of Fame. The male subject fled on foot and was later apprehended by Payne County Deputies near Virginia and Perkins. The pickup did have what appeared to be bullet holes to the front of the truck. This confirmed the stories provided by witnesses. The male subject was positively identified as the driver of the pickup involved in the incident on Payne Street.
The male was identified as John Wisehart, 44, of Stillwater. He was arrested and transported to Payne County Jail.
Due to the other parties involved believed to be running east from the area, Highland Park Elementary was placed in a secure in place as a safety precaution.
This case is still being investigated by SPD Detectives. Charges will be presented to the Payne County District Attorney’s Office.
