OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. John Talley, R-Stillwater, said he is working with legislators on an amendment to require public schools designate restrooms be used by individuals based on their biological sex.

On April 18, the Stillwater Public Schools Board of Education adopted a resolution stating that the Board intends to continue the school district’s “practice of permitting transgender students to use restrooms that align with their gender identity unless it has no choice but to alter its practice because of binding authority directing otherwise.”

“I am working to address this issue in statute,” said Talley. “The amendment currently in progress will provide statutory guidance to public schools that may be facing this issue, and also give the Attorney General, State Board of Education and Stillwater School Board much-needed clarity on this important matter.”

Talley said he heard from many concerned constituents and discussed potential courses of action with the Attorney General, and Talley is hopeful legislation will clear up any confusion.

He is working with fellow legislators to build support for an amendment to the bill that would address the issue. Talley said he hopes the amendment will be presented on the House floor Thursday, ahead of the legislative deadline to pass bills out of the opposite chamber.
