(Stillwater, Okla.) — A 62-year-old Stillwater man accused of raping his female roommate while she was unconscious due to a heat stroke has been jailed on $50,000 bail pending a Sept. 13 court appearance at which he can seek a preliminary hearing on the felony charge.

If convicted of rape by instrumentation, Edward James Lockwood could be sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison to a maximum of life without parole in the state penitentiary.

In a petition for an emergency protective order, the woman described her relationship to Lockwood only as an ex-roommate, court records show.

She wrote, “In the afternoon of July 30th, I was at the swimming pool when my friends noticed I was having a heat stroke. They took me to the room I’m currently staying and sharing with my roommate, Edward Lockwood.

“My friends told me I was passed out in my bed by the time they left the room due to the heat stroke. They wanted to call an ambulance, but Edward refused stating that I was going to be fine. Later that day, I woke up with Edward Lockwood raping me.

“I called 911 and he is currently in jail. I need this protection because I am afraid of what he will do. He is a very big man while I am petite size. I am petrified of him.”

Lockwood was arrested at 5:04 pm on July 30 at a motel on W. 6th Avenue where he shared a room with the woman, who said she slept on a bed closest to the door, Stillwater Police Officer Zachary Gulick wrote in an affidavit.

“I made contact with Edward and asked him what was going on. Edward hung his head and stated he did something he should not have done…As I was standing with Edward waiting for backup to arrive, Edward stated ‘she woke up’ and ‘I did not think she would react like that,"” the affidavit alleged.

Lockwood, whom she described as very big, is 6’2’ and weighs 560 pounds, according to her petition for an EPO that was issued on Aug. 4.
