The Downtown Cushing Main Street program is currently accepting nominations/applications for new board membership. Several terms set to expire on Dec. 31st. These are three year terms.
The board meets at noon on the last Tuesday of the month and is responsible for the financing, operation and administration of the 501 © 3 organization.
The Main Street program is involved with revitalization of Downtown Cushing using the Four Point approach developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Those four points are Promotion, Organization, Economic Restructuring and Design. In a nutshell, the work is to identify and promote the unique, positive points of downtown, identify current and future needs that will help prepare Downtown for the future, and to do it while fostering an appreciation of Downtown history.
The designated Downtown Main Street area is from Steele street to Depot and from the north side of Cherry street to Moses as well as a strip north to Oak on Cleveland and a strip south from Cherry along the east side of Noble to encompass the American Legion Building (downtown’s first and only listing on the National Register of Historic Places).
“We realize of course that downtown doesn’t exist in a vacuum and we work hard at keeping connected and relevant to the whole community”, says Debbie Moody, president of DCMS.
Current board members are: Debbie Moody, Bobby Farley, Sue McQuillen, Judy Goddard, Laura Butler, Mary Ann Puckett, Betsy Hibbard, Brenda Magdeburg, Peggy Fowler, Kelly Dilley, Lynda Cummings and Ardell Greenwood. Ex-officios are Brent Bruner (Chamber President), Holly Tichenor (Chamber Director), Steve Spears (interim city manager) and Robert Felts (economic development director).
“I believe that Downtown is the heart of Cushing, where our history started. It’s important to preserve what we have and aid in future growth’, said board member Peggy Fowler.
The requirements for serving on the board are that applicant be a paid member of DCMS and be willing to spend time and energy in promoting the goals of the organization.
Those interested in serving are encouraged to make application or to call the Main Street office at 225-2100 for more information.
