(Stillwater, Okla.) — A Cushing man accused of punching his girlfriend after vaping with what she thought was marijuana, hitting a Cushing police officer, and attacking a prisoner in the Payne County Jail has been ordered to appear before a judge on Sept. 14 when he can seek a preliminary hearing on his felony charges.
Cameron J. Tyler Fox, 21, remains in custody on $15,000 total bail on charges of domestic assault and battery as a subsequent offense, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault and battery on a jail inmate, court records show.
Fox had been arrested at 3:55 p.m. on July 24 at the residence of his girlfriend, who said he “started hitting her in the face, pushing her down on the ground (and) choking her,” during which she lost consciousness from being hit in the back of her head, an affidavit by Cushing Police Officer David Smith alleged.
Fox’s girlfriend said “when she became alert again, she had told Fox she was going to go lay down,” but instead left the residence and went to a gas station to have someone call police, the affidavit alleged.
Fox’s girlfriend’s face “was very swollen; she had a raised lump on her forehead and several marks and bruises on her face and arms,” the Cushing officer wrote in his affidavit. She also had “redness in her eyes and her mouth appeared to be swollen,” the affidavit said.
She “was assisted into the ambulance and requested to be taken to the hospital for her injuries,” the affidavit said.
While she was being transported to the Cushing hospital, four law enforcement officers went to the woman’s residence to contact Fox, the affidavit said.
Payne County Sheriff’s Deputy Bobby Miller and the Cushing officer saw Fox walking south in the 400 block of N. Howerton Avenue with a medium-sized stick in his hand, the affidavit alleged.
“Dep. Miller advised Fox to drop the stick. Sgt. Watts approached Fox from the rear and was attempting to get the stick out of reach from Fox. Fox saw Watts attempting to get the possible weapon away from him and lunged towards Watts striking him in the left side of his head,” the affidavit alleged.
“Dep. Miller, Sgt. Watts, Officer Reynolds and I then attempted to apprehend Fox and a struggle ensued on the ground. Fox bit my finger as I was attempting to keep him from moving around. Fox would not release his arms out from underneath his body and continued to resist. Fox was eventually placed into handcuffs,” and arrested at 3:55 p.m. that day, Officer Smith alleged in his affidavit.
“It was also later discovered Fox had a knife on his person that was removed from him some time during the fight,” the affidavit alleged.
“During the fight, both of my knees were scraped due to the struggle. Deputy Miller’s glasses were also broken during the fight. I transported Fox to the Cushing city jail,” at about 4:09 p.m., Officer Smith wrote in his affidavit.
When the officer went to the Cushing hospital, Fox’s girlfriend “advised me Fox had been using a vape pen with what she thought contained marijuana. However, she advised me he had never acted like this before,” Officer Smith wrote in his affidavit.
According to court records, Fox had been charged with domestic assault and battery in 2018 in Logan County and was given a one-year suspended sentence, which 11 months later the prosecution filed a motion to revoke, in the misdemeanor case on which he has been ordered to appear in court on Sept. 11.
Eleven days after Fox was placed in the Payne County Jail in his Cushing case, he was charged with aggravated assault and battery on another prisoner at about 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, court records show.
Payne County Sheriff’s Deputy Boomer Jones said he heard yelling from Trusty North Pod and saw a fight in progress, according to his affidavit.
Inmate Fox was on top of another inmate and punching him in the face, the affidavit alleged. The injured inmate was transported to the Stillwater Medical Center for a laceration on his upper lip and a separated shoulder, the affidavit alleged. Fox had a laceration on his right hand, the affidavit alleged.
“I reviewed camera footage from the incident,” that showed the injured inmate sitting on a day-room table, with inmate Fox seated to his right, the deputy alleged in his affidavit.
When the other inmate looked away from inmate Fox, Fox then punched him in the face, threw him on the ground, pulled his hair to hold him down, got on top of him and continued to punch him, the affidavit alleged. “That’s when myself and Sgt. Ingham broke the fight up,” Deputy Jones alleged in his affidavit.
