(Stillwater, Okla.) — A teenager named as a shooting suspect in a Stillwater police news release has filed a motion through his attorney for a reduction in his $500,000 bail set on gun and drug charges by Special District Judge Michael Kulling, who scheduled a hearing on the bail issue for this afternoon.
Ricky Daxton Blade Brunt, 18, who was listed in court documents as having a Perkins address, but living in Stillwater according to a police news release, has not been charged with shooting a juvenile in the head with a semi-automatic rifle on July 11, court records showed this morning.
Brunt was arrested during an investigation of shots being fired at 12:24 a.m. on July 11, according to an affidavit by Stillwater Police Detective JP Johnson.
When police arrived at the scene, they learned that the juvenile victim had been transported by private vehicle to the Stillwater Medical Center, Cpt. Kyle Gibbs said in a news release.
The gunshot victim was later transferred to an Oklahoma City hospital where he was listed as being in serious but stable condition, the news release said.
At about the same time as a report of shots fired in the area of 11th and Hester Street in Stillwater, Officer Alonzo Cordova was in the 600 block of W. 13th Street when he saw a 1998 Buick sedan traveling without headlights and with a large metal pole protruding from the windshield, the detective’s affidavit alleged.
When the officer stopped the vehicle, the backseat passenger, identified as Ricky Brunt, “spontaneously said that he ‘didn’t mean to shoot the kid,"” the affidavit alleged.
“Several gunshot holes could be seen in the hood and in the metal pole protruding from the windshield,” the affidavit alleged.
“A black semi-automatic rifle could be seen in the backseat floorboard area. Brunt further volunteered that there was methamphetamine and valium in a backpack in the backseat area,” the affidavit alleged.
After a search warrant for the car was obtained, the detective found in the rear passenger-side seat a gray and black backpack with a pocket that had a black zippered case containing two small zip-lock baggies of suspected methamphetamine, two small zip-lock baggies with 42.5 green bar-shaped pills identified as 2 mg Alprazolam, one small zip-lock baggy with six blue round-shaped pills identified as 1 mg Alprazolam, a small digital scale, and numerous unused zippered plastic baggies commonly found with illegal drug distribution, the affidavit alleged.
“Also located in the vehicle was a black Pioneer Arms Hell Pup 7.62 x 39 semi-automatic rifle, which is similar in design to a more commonly known AK-47 rifle. The rifle was both chamber and magazine-loaded and was sitting in the back seat,” next to the backpack, the affidavit alleged.
“Numerous conflicting stories regarding the details that led to and the events that occurred during the shooting have been received from various witnesses,” according to the police news release.
“The victim hasn’t been available for interview thus far,” according to the news release issued last week.
“This investigation is complex and is still being conducted. Upon its completion, the case will be presented to the Payne County District Attorney’s Office for a determination of what, if any, charges are appropriate,” the news release said.
Brunt has already been charged with possessing the drug, methamphetamine, with intent to distribute, possessing the drug, Alprazolam, with intent to distribute, and possessing a firearm while committing the drug offenses, court records show.
If convicted of all counts, Brunt could be given as much as 24-year prison term and a $210,000 fine, court records show.
Brunt has been scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 3 when he can seek a preliminary hearing on his three-count felony charge.
