(Stillwater, Okla.) — A repeat drug offender from Oklahoma City has been ordered to appear before a Payne County judge Tuesday with an attorney on a felony charge of attempted strangulation of his girlfriend in Stillwater on May 16, court records show.
Tyaun Jamal Givens, 36, who got out of prison four years ago, has been held in the Payne County Jail on $5,000 bail since his arrest at 7 p.m. on May 16 by Stillwater Police Officer Kurt Merrill. Givens has been ordered by a judge to have no contact with his alleged victim as a condition of bond, court records show.
About 20 minutes before his arrest, Givens attacked his girlfriend, who had marks and scratches on her neck consistent with strangulation, bruising on her face, and scratches on her back, the officer’s affidavit alleged.
According to the state Department of Corrections and Oklahoma County court records, Givens was released from prison in April of 2015 after serving about nine months of a two-year sentence he received in July of 2014 for possession of methamphetamine in 2013.
Givens had previously been convicted of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute in 2004 and possession of marijuana in 2006, for which he was given two concurrent five-year suspended sentences in 2006, court records show.
