(Cushing, Okla.) Fraud is a multi-billion dollar criminal industry and every person is at risk. RCB Bank, Bank of Cushing and Cushing Public Schools partner to present a free community education event entitled Fraud Talk, taking place Tuesday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dora Hobbs Auditorium at Cushing High School.
In 2014, fraudsters stole $16 billion from 12.7 million U.S. consumers, according to Javelin Strategy & Research. There is a new identity theft victim every two seconds. In business, 31 percent of small businesses in the U.S. are victims of fraud each year, according to a survey by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. That’s almost one out of every three businesses.
“Criminals are savvy and sneaky, and they don’t discriminate,” said Jerod Helling, RCB Bank Market President. “All ages, demographics, households and businesses are at risk, and with all our mobile gadgets and technology, it’s vital we are careful with what we’re doing and posting online. Everyone in the community can benefit from this event.”
Fraud expert Elaine Dodd, with Oklahoma Bankers Association (OBA), will talk about trending schemes, including identity theft, lotteries/sweepstakes, debit/credit card fraud and internet scams. She will also share how to recognize fraud and how to prevent becoming a victim.
Dodd spent 22 years in law enforcement doing investigative work the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, retiring in 1995 as director. She joined the OBA in 2003, provides fraud training to thousands of bankers and customers across the state.
