(Stillwater, Okla.) An 18-year-old woman has been ordered to appear in court Friday with an attorney on a felony charge of using a Stillwater man’s lost debit card while she was employed as a cashier at the Dollar General Store on E. Sixth Street in Stillwater on June 14.
Brittany Re’Anne Redding was warned in court on Aug. 28 by Special District Judge Katherine Thomas that she must have an attorney on Sept. 11 or her $5,000 bond would be revoked and she would be jailed.
The debit card owner reported that he bought $9.52 worth of merchandise at the Dollar General on June 14 in the afternoon with his debit card – which he noticed that evening was missing, Stillwater Police Officer Terry Low wrote in an affidavit.
The victim said that he didn’t think too much about it, until the next day when he checked his bank statement and noticed three transactions were made on June 14 at the Dollar General and four transactions were used at www.amazon.com on June 15, the affidavit said.
He said “he immediately contacted his bank and requested they cancel his credit card and current charges pending,” the affidavit said.
The victim said “he thought his debit card number might have been duplicated so he contacted Amazon Customer Service on June 16,” and was advised that his credit card had been used on an Amazon account, the affidavit said.
He said he was told that they could only give him the first name of the account holder, Brittany, who “had used his card and updated her Amazon account,” the affidavit alleged.
That same day, he contacted the Dollar General manager to see if Brittany worked there on June 14 and was told that she did work that evening, the affidavit alleged.
“I attempted to contact customer service with Amazon approximately four times,” the Stillwater police officer wrote in his affidavit.
“I was unable to get any information from them unless I was to file a form through the fraud department. I asked for the fraud department’s number and was advised they do not have a direct contact number,” the officer wrote in his affidavit.
That same day, the officer spoke to an on-duty supervisor at the Dollar General Store where he was told that Brittany “actually called in sick today,” the affidavit alleged.
The supervisor said her last name was Redding and that she was very petite, the affidavit alleged.
Asked her age, the supervisor said, “She is a dancer for Blue Diamond so I assume she would have to be at least 18 years old,” the affidavit said.
Then the supervisor and the officer watched video footage of “Brittany working at the cash register,” on June 14, the affidavit said.
Shortly before 6 p.m. “we observed Brittany purchasing a pack of cigarettes on the camera,” the officer wrote in his affidavit.
“Brittany retrieved something from her left chest area under her shirt and pays for the item and placed it back in there,” the affidavit alleged.
About 7:20 p.m. “Brittany is seen purchasing a drink and some other items and selecting the item from her left chest area and placing it back there,” the affidavit alleged.
At 8:08 p.m., “Brittany is seen selecting several items with some clothing and purchased them. This could have been consistent with the transaction of $27.75,” the affidavit alleged.
The supervisor said “they are not supposed to purchase items with a debit card while they are working due to instances like this,” the affidavit said.
Redding was arrested on July 10 and released the same day on $5,000 bail, court records show.
If convicted of concealing a lost debit card, Redding could be given a three-year prison term and a $3,000 fine, court records show.
