(Cushing, Okla.) Russ Thurman, President of the local Lions Club International, called the meeting to order today at 12:13 p.m. The agenda started with song and pledge by Jerry Snyder. This was followed by requests for prayers and the prayer with Reverend Kevin Clouse.
Lions Club then welcomed all of today’s guests including: Wings of Hope, Development Officer, Katie Hollingsworth and Remote Victim Advocate, Kayla Colon along with Rhodes Scholar Kirby Applegate.
Hollingsworth and Colon were given a donation/check for a Wings of Hope Butterfly which had been purchased by several of the clubs members. The butterfly symbolizes hope, new life, and growth through its caterpillar to butterfly transformation. It also reminds the community that there is a place to go when home is not safe anymore. Applegate a Rhodes Scholar from Cushing and a graduate of Oklahoma State University was selected through the process of a draft to attend Oriel College which is a constituent college of the University of Oxford where he will be furthering his education. Applegate knows several languages including Hebrew, Latin, German, and French and will teach the New Testament while in College. He plans to look for work in an academic setting when he completes his schooling.
Buck Blake was the winner of the 50/50 drawing and of one of three prizes that Kateri Holbert supplied. The two other winners of Holbert’s prizes were Gerald Jolley and Jim Pickard.
Holbert also ask the club to supply Wings of Hope with school supplies.
Jim Pickard was given an honorable mention for his Birthday which was August 8th (2015). Pickard is 70 years old.
The 4 Person Open Scramble, sponsored by the Cushing Lions Club is still needing teams for the August 18th (2015) Golf Tournament. Contact Gerald Jolley for more information at (918) 225 – 0660, Jolley Realty. All proceeds go to benefit Lions Club “Sight Testing” program.
New signs for the club are being ordered and will be placed on main arteries coming into Cushing when they arrive.
Thurman ask that all club members remember our motto “We Serve”.
