(Stillwater, Okla.) — An ex-employee of Staples has been ordered to pay restitution of $8,664, the amount he admitted having embezzled from the Stillwater store in December 2014.

Former Stillwater resident Avery Jacob Gilmore, 22, now of Sapulpa, was placed on five years’ probation last week with an order to perform 50 hours of community service as well as pay $300 in fines and assessments, along with court costs.

“Avery stated he completed fraudulent returns in order to obtain cash cards so that he could buy items for his apartment,” Stillwater Police Officer Jared Noles wrote in an affidavit.

“Avery also said he used two coupons so that he could provide a receipt,” the affidavit said.

The officer, who was called to the Stillwater store on Jan. 2 where Gilmore was a team supervisor, wrote in his affidavit, “While Avery was sitting at the desk, he removed his wallet and handed me six gift cards. Avery stated these were the cash cards he obtained.

“Avery stated he has the rest of the cards at his residence and willing to turn those over as evidence.”

Gilmore was sentenced by Payne County Associate District Judge Stephen Kistler, who approved Gilmore’s plea agreement with the prosecution in court on June 5.
