(Stillwater, Okla.) – A Cushing woman, who is on probation for fraudulently obtaining the drug, hydrocodone, at the Cushing Walmart two years ago, has been charged with presenting a counterfeit check for $1,894 to customer service at the Stillwater Walmart on Perkins Road.
Cindy Lou Cornett, 45, was scheduled to be arraigned on the felony charge this afternoon, court records show.
Stillwater Police Officer Terry Low was sent shortly before 9 p.m. on April 7 to the Stillwater Walmart on Perkins Road regarding a counterfeit check, according to his affidavit filed in court records on Friday.
An employee said that at about 8 p.m. she was approached in the money center by Cornett, who wanted to cash a check she had recently received, the affidavit alleged.
The employee said that the check was clearly photocopied, was missing watermarks, had uneven edges and appeared to have been burnt in an upper corner, the affidavit alleged.
The employee said “she told Cornett that she would have to get the check approved by her manager before she could cash it,” the affidavit said.
The employee said “Cornett panicked and quickly left the store,” the affidavit alleged.
She said that “Cornett called the store approximately 45 minutes after she had left and stated that she would be returning to collect the check,” but never did, the affidavit alleged.
“I asked if Cornett was able to obtain any money from Walmart for the check and they stated that she didn’t. They stated the machine wouldn’t scan the check in,” the officer wrote in his affidavit.
The previous year, Cornett had been placed on five years’ probation under a deferred sentence for obtaining the drug, hydrocodone, from the Cushing Walmart Pharmacy by presenting a prescription by phone while misrepresenting herself as a nurse from a Tulsa doctor’s office on Jan. 8, 2013, court records show.
Cornett, who pleaded guilty to obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, was ordered to have a substance abuse evaluation, perform any recommended follow-up, have random drug tests, attend weekly NA/AA meetings, do 50 hours of community service, and pay $700 in fines and assessments, court records show.
