According to Commissioners Rossiter and Manning, the question has come up on more than one occasion: “Are golf carts allowed on city streets?” At the Board of Commissioners’ meeting held Monday, they agreed to examine the possibility of allowing golf carts to become a means of transportation on Cushing city streets.
“I think it would be a step ahead for Cushing,” Rossiter said, “and it would be better for the environment.”
Before any decisions can be made whether or not to allow golf carts on city streets, it must first be determined what is legal and what is not.
The commission tabled the topic until further information can be gathered by City Attorney Stuart Arthurs and disseminated to the members.
Items approved on the agenda included the consent docket, a $20,000 payment to Downtown Cushing Main Street Program, the purchase of a new pickup for Emergency Management and the appointment of Barbara Colclazure, Suzy Crowder, Jayn Carson, Ron McNew and Casey Dawes to the Cushing Library Board.
Steve Spears reported the street department is in the process of making repairs and that the parks department is working very hard to clear the duck pond of its unsightly vegetation.
“I think it just got away from them,” Spears said, “We’ll try to keep a handle on it.”
Rossiter spoke up and said there have been reports of kids swimming in the pond. He went on to recommend the public be reminded – “the pond is not a swimming hole.”
Commissioners attending Monday’s meeting were Joe Manning, Tommy Johnson and Evert Rossiter. Mayor John Henckel and Commissioner Jim Hogrefe were unable to attend due to work-related issues.
The next regular meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 18.
