(Cushing, Okla.) The April Legislative Luncheon was held today (Friday, April 24th, 2015) at Steer Inn Restaurant, starting at 11:30 (a.m.), lunch was available to attendees.
Representative Lee Denney Speaker Pro Tempore and Senator James Halligan took the floor at approximately noon to speak about what’s been happening in session, including some of the bills that passed through legislative hands this session such as the 24/7 Tobacco Free Schools legislation, approved by an Oklahoma Senate committee, to prohibit use of all tobacco products in public schools and making them tobacco free. DNA Collection Procedure was another piece of legislation that went through legislative hands this session. This bill required physicians to preserve fetal tissue in certain circumstances from abortions of victims in relationship to them being used in the OSBI Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) Database. The DNA Collection Procedure legislation did not pass.
Halligan told the group that on the last day of hearing bills, they heard a new one about every 15 seconds.
The question once again was asked whether a plan for a stop light to be installed at Harmony Road and Highway 33 is in the works. Rep. Denney said it is being addressed and is “on the radar.” It was suggested a letter be written and obtain signatures from 250 or more Cushing residents to help move the effort along.
