(OKLAHOMA CITY) – The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office honored law enforcement officers and civilians from across the state at the OHSO Annual Traffic Safety Forum April 3 at the Embassy Suites Hotel and conference Center in Norman.

Sgt. Ed Ferguson (retired), Broken Arrow Police Department, received the Duane C. Clark Award, presented annually to a traffic safety advocate who has exemplified outstanding leadership and dedication. The award, created in 1997, is named for a long-time highway safety advocate.

The J.C. Burris Memorial Award went to Regina McCurdy, Injury Prevention Specialist at the Oklahoma State Department of Health. The Burris Award honors dedication to occupant protection and other highway safety issues and is presented each year in memory of the late J.C. Burris, OHSO Law Enforcement Liaison Officer.

Capt. Garrett Vowell, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, received a Special Recognition Award for his outstanding work with impaired driving prevention projects and implementation of ENDUI enforcement efforts.

The Tavia Dooley Safe Communities Award went to Chief Don Hyde, Calera PD. Hyde was honored for his leadership in the Southeastern Oklahoma Traffic Safety Coalition and his involvement with community safety projects.

Recipients of Awards of Excellence for management of FY14 highway safety projects included: Vince Barnard, Board of Tests for Alcohol and Drug Influence; Lt. Troy German, OHP; Judge Carol Hubbard and Lindsey Tilley, East Central University; Lt. Tommy Joyce, Oklahoma City PD; and Capt. Greg Read, McAlester PD.

“Each of these award winners has worked diligently to promote highway safety in our state,” said OHSO Director Garry Thomas. “Lives are being saved in Oklahoma because of their efforts, and we are proud to honor them for their achievements.”
