(Cushing, Okla.) On Saturday, May 10, 2014 letter carriers in more than 120 cities in central and western Oklahoma will help “Stamp Out Hunger” by collecting canned food donations from households on their route. This is part of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers’ Food Drive.
To help “Stamp Out Hunger”, fill the plastic donatin bag you receive in your mailbox this week, or any plastic bag, with canned food donations and place it by your mailbox on Saturday, May 10th before your letter carrier arrives. In Cushing, canned food donations will benefit Cushing Community Food Pantry.
Most needed items include: canned meats, meat-based soups, canned fruits, canned vegetables, peanut butter, and rice and beans. Nonperishable food donations can also be dropped off at participating post offices (does include Cushing Post Office, 116 S. Cleveland Ave.) and metro-area fire stations. Monetary donations can also be made online at regionalfoodbank.org or by calling 405-600-3131. Every dollar donated will provide five meals for Oklahomans with inconsistent access to food.
Last year, the Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers Food Drive raised more than 885,000 pounds of food and $1.3 million, which provided more than 7.3 million meals for hungry children, families and seniors in central and western Oklahoma. This year, the Regional Food Bank hopes to collect enough food and monetary donations to keep pace with the demand for food assistance, which continues to rise.
“We are turning to Oklahomans once again to help us fight hunger and feed hope in Oklahoma,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank. “Donations will make sure that long summer days won’t turn into long hungry nights for Oklahoma children, families and seniors.”
Other participating cities in the area include: Bristow, Chandler, Guthrie, Pawnee, Perkins, Stillwater and Yale.
