They are a favorite Fourth of July tradition throughout our land – annual fireworks displays. The “ooohs and the ahhhs” of the crowd, the bringing together of the community – and that look of wonder in a child’s eyes. It’s just not the Fourth of July without fireworks – but this year it might have to be.
For the first time in approximately 15 years, Cushing does not have a fireworks display planned. The reason? Money. For many years, VFW Post 1118 sponsored the display, but last year they announced they just didn’t have enough funds to continue their sponsorship so the City of Cushing stepped up last year to fill in the gap. But this year? There isn’t a sponsor – well, at least not YET.
Cushing Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bobby Bryant sent out an “S.O.S.” to all Chamber members looking for sponsorships – yes, plural. If one sponsor can’t do it all, then why not team together?
Bryant, Mayor John Henckel and Fire Chief Brent Kerr are looking for business owners, clubs, corporate friends and concerned citizens to pool their resources to come up with the funding for a fireworks display – and the clock is ticking.
If you would like to know what you can do to help, please contact Brent Kerr at 918-225-3361 or Bobby Bryant at 918-225-2400.
