Every year in April we celebrate the Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. It was on April 11, 1968, the Civil Rights Act of 1968, was signed by President Johnson. The 1968 act also known as the Fair Housing Act expanded on previous acts of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. It prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex and in 1988 it was amended to included handicap and family status.

Congress had regularly considered the fair housing bill, but failed to have a strong enough majority for its passage until the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King at which time it then only took one week.
