(Stillwater, Okla.) — An ex-convict from Cushing — arrested outside a downtown Cushing bar by a sheriff’s deputy on outstanding warrants — has pleaded guilty to possessing methamphetamine found in his pocket during the Payne County jail booking process.
Billy Kent Boyd, 53, remains jailed on $20,000 bail pending his May 9 sentencing before District Judge Phillip Corley, who accepted Boyd’s plea Friday and ordered a background report on him.
Payne County Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Myers wrote in an affidavit that at 1:41 a.m. on Jan. 5, he arrived at the Buckhorn Bar to assist Cushing police who had been dispatched for an unknown disturbance.
“Upon my arrival, I noticed several males standing in front of the bar exchanging words. The group immediately noticed my presence and started to separate in different directions,” the deputy wrote in his affidavit.
“I knew that Mr. Boyd had outstanding warrants for his arrest and attempted to make contact with him,” but Boyd continuously tried to walk away and enter a vehicle, the deputy wrote in his affidavit.
“Mr. Boyd would not listen to verbal commands to stay out of the vehicle and was placed in handcuffs. After confirming through dispatch that Mr. Boyd had four outstanding warrants, I advised him he was under arrest,” the deputy wrote in his affidavit.
“Once inside the Payne County Jail, Detention Deputy Shane Crockett was attempting to search and change Mr. Boyd. During the search, Deputy Crockett located a small plastic bag inside Mr. Boyd’s front right watch pocket,” the affidavit said.
“The substance (inside the bag) field-tested positive for methamphetamines,” the affidavit said.
Boyd — who has been known by the aliases of Larry J. Steward, Larry J. Stewart, Larry R. Stewart and Renegade Stewart, according to the state Department of Corrections — got out of prison two years ago, DOC records show.
Boyd was originally placed on three years’ probation in 2009 for attempted escape from arrest in Cushing in 2007, and five years’ probation in 2005 for possession of cocaine in Cushing in 2004, court records show.
In 2010, Boyd’s probation was revoked to three years in prison on both cases with credit for time served and then released in 2012, court records show.
In 1994, Boyd had been placed on seven years’ probation for delivery of crack cocaine, DOC records show.
