(Cushing, Okla.) Cushing Lions Club had several guest speakers at their regular Tuesday meeting. Two of their guests had competed in a local Lions Club youth speech contest and were invited to share them with members.
The speeches given by Matt Porter, 17, of Cushing and Aubrey Snider, 14, of Glencoe, were about “Making a Difference Everyday.”
Each brought their own personal touch to their speeches. Porter talked about the importance of leadership, citizenship and community service, while Snider built her speech around being “third” – God first, others second and self third.
District 3-H Governor and Cushing Lion Tom Cummings announced the winner of the recent contest after the two finished giving their speeches. First place went to Aubrey Snider and second to Matt Porter. The two will present their speeches again for district competition on Feb. 1st at the District meeting to be held in Cushing at the First United Methodist Church.
Lions members also heard from Amber Long regarding a rare disease and its impact on her family. Nonketotic Hyperglycinemia (NKH) is listed by the Office of Rare Disease as a rare and incurable inherited metabolic disorder. Long’s passion – and mission – is to bring awareness to the disorder. In October, the annual Turtle Crawl Poker Run will be held. For more information on NKH or to make a donation visit: www.nkhcrusaders.com
Cushing Lions Club meets each Tuesday at noon in the Lions Den located in downtown Cushing.
