(Cushing, Okla.)  Cushing Chamber of Commerce held a reception for February Business After School recipients on Monday.  Each month throughout the school year, two high school seniors (one boy and one girl) one support person and one teacher are honored.

This month’s recipients were: CHS students, Nick Tanner and Taylor Jones; support person Alisa Turner; and teacher Marcia Hargrove.

Marcia Hargrove is a first grade teacher at Sunnyside School.  She is married to her “best friend” Jim Hargrove and they have one daughter, Tori, who will soon be 18.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading and playing bluegrass music with her husband and is very active in her home church, Lost Creek Methodist Church.

Hargrove also enjoys volunteering and supporting Cushing children by contributing to various fund raisers.

She admits her school family is very important to her and says, “I have been blessed to work in a great environment, with kind, caring and friendly people.  There are excellent educators behind every door.  The staff that actually makes the school run, so we can teach, keeps us from being a ‘dysfunctional’ family!”

When asked what her greatest joy as a teacher is, she explained: “I receive joy from the look on a student’s face when he ‘gets it’.  There is great joy in watching my first graders begin to show social responsibility and maturity.  May heart lifts when I receive a spontaneous hug, or a former student greets me in public.  When a child is having difficulty with his work, or has broken a rule, or needs help remembering how to behave like a first grader, it is the trust that child places in me when I say, ‘I will help you through this’ that gives me the greatest joy.”

CHS senior Taylor Jones enjoys playing basketball, watching movies and being part of her youth group – and Italian food!  If she could spend the day with anyone, Taylor answered: “Justin Bieber!  I love him and his music!”

When asked to “brag a little” on herself, Taylor admits to playing basketball well and is “pretty good at cleaning.”

As for future plans, Taylor expects to be working in a salon, but “God could have different plans for my life.”

Nick Tanner, senior at CHS, comes from a large family.  “I have five brothers, Philip, Brandon, Bryan, Steven and Aaron and two sisters, Julie and Stacy.  And a dog named Rusty,” he said.  Nick is the son of Bobby and Donna Tanner.

Nick’s special interests include golf.  “I love to play golf!  I have played golf since I was old enough to swing the club.  I also love to hunt.”  He is also a member of the First Baptist Church and attends Oak Grove youth.

When asked to “brag a little” on himself, Nick said he is a “good golfer” and has been to the state tournament in golf every year since he’s been in high school.

Support person Alisa Turner from Harrison School cafeteria was not present at the reception.
