(Cushing, Okla.)  The Cushing Fire Department would like to wish everyone a happy 4th of July. We would also like to remind everyone that City Code Section 42-211 prohibits anyone to possess, use or discharge fireworks within the corporate city limits.

“I want to remind citizens that fireworks can be dangerous if not handled appropriately,” said Chief Chris Pixler. “Because we are experiencing very dry conditions, the fire danger increases, so it is imperative that citizens remain ever mindful of this danger,” he said. “With outstanding community support, my staff is preparing a great fireworks show for our citizens so I would encourage all citizens to look forward with great anticipation to that show in lieu of shooting your own fireworks and risking injury or property loss,” said Chief Pixler.

As part of our commitment to help you stay safe, we are offering the following safety tips:

-Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks

-Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks

-Fireworks should only be used outdoors

-Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks

-Know your fireworks. Read the caution label before igniting

-Obey local laws

-Alcohol and fireworks do not mix

-Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water

-Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can
