(Cleveland, Okla.) In a season where everything seems to be going the way of the Lady Tigers, but for the boy’s basketball team, not so much. Cushing’s 4A 5th ranked Lady Tigers won its 10th game in a row Tuesday night in convincing fashion improving their record to 14-1 on the season with a 66-40 win.
But that’s not the big story from Cleveland. The boys put themselves in the spotlight Tuesday evening with a quadruple overtime game in a tiger battle like no other. With 3 minutes to go in the game, Cushing found themselves trailing by 6 points when senior point guard Dawson Myers made back to back 3 pointers to tie it at 38 a piece. In the first overtime Cushing was working from trailing behind again, but only by two, when Drew Wilson made a pivotal layup to tie the game again. Cleveland turned the ball over with 7.6 seconds to go in the first overtime and that gave the tigers a shot at the win, but they couldn’t get the shot to drop, however their attempts were followed by a successful long three by Bingham Hightower. The second and third overtimes were like much of the rest of the game, a very tight ball game, but it seemed like Cushing just couldn’t get the shot to hit when they were at the free throw line.
In the 4th overtime, Cleveland was able to get the lead early, but Cushing was able to get to the free throw line and seal the win. Cleveland was unable to convert on free throws of their own and that won it for the tigers. Cushing defeated Cleveland in 4 overtimes 61-60. Cushing had four players in double figures, Drew Wilson with 14, Nick Tanner with 18, Dawson Myers with 10, and Bingham Hightower with 11. The Cushing boys improve to 5-9 on the season.
