Velma Christine Goodwin, a lifetime Cushing resident, passed away on Friday evening, October 14, 2011 at Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 86.  Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Chapel of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing.  Pastor Steve Orton will officiate.  Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, Cushing.

Velma Christine was born on June 20, 1925 in Yale, Oklahoma to the late Arthur Eugene and Pearl (Wooldridge) Hutson.  Velma grew up in Cushing, graduating from Cushing High School in 1943.  Velma married James Wayland Hibbard on September 11, 1943 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.  To this union two children were born, James “Randy” and Sheila.

While her children were young, she was actively involved in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts.  Velma was a C.P.A. and worked for many individuals for their tax preparations.  She worked for Earl Bray Truck Lines for fifteen years.  Velma wasn’t quite ready to retire, so she worked as the Fabric Lady, cashier and greeter at Wal Mart for seven years.  She was active in the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron, Cushing Hospital Volunteer, and O.C.A.W. Ladies Auxiliary, where she attended numerous national conventions.  After the death of her husband, she married A.J. Goodwin on October 29, 1983 in Muskogee.  Throughout the years, Velma enjoyed traveling to Europe, Singapore and most of the countries in Asia with her daughter Sheila.  She also enjoyed crocheting, quilting and ceramics.  She attended cake decorating classes and enjoyed making the grandchildren cakes for their birthdays.  Velma loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

Velma is survived by her son James Randall “Randy” Hibbard of Lawton, daughter Sheila Larson and husband Douglas of Cushing, grandchildren Dr. Jennifer Lynn Walker and husband Joe, Denise Hibbard Riddell and husband Clayton, Melanie Jean Herman and husband Jonathan, Lance Eric Larson and wife Donna, Anthony Birton Larson, Dana Nicklaus Larson, Christopher Douglas Larson and wife Kara, great grandchildren Tyler Barlow, Micah Walker, Julia Larson, Andy Larson Ashlea Frederick, Haley Larson, Rachel Larson, Toni Larson, Derek Larson, Natalie Larson, Camille Akins, Nichlaus Larson, Aubrey Larson, Jonathan Larson, one great great grandchild Rylee Frederick.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, sisters Erma Kindle and Gayle Bassett, and one great grandchild Lynn Taylor Larson.
