Leon Clarence Turnbow, former longtime Cushing resident, now of Enid, OK, passed away early Thursday morning, September 29, 2011, in Enid at the age of 80 years.
The son of the late Clarence S. Turnbow and Hazel Eva Wright Turnbow, Leon was born on October 24, 1930 South East of Cushing, graduating from Cushing High School.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Irene Wolff on February 27, 1954, in Cushing. Leon and Joyce were blessed with over 57 years of marriage. To this union two sons, Alan and Jeff were born. Over the years the couple had lived in Oklahoma City, Guymon, Cushing, and Enid.
Leon was involved in the restaurant business, both in Guymon and Enid, retiring from work as an oilfield equipment distributor.
Leon will long be remembered for his passion of raising, training and racing in the Quarter horse industry. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War. A former member of the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission and a member of the Lutheran Church of our Redeemer.
Leon served his Country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Helena.
Survivors include his wife Joyce of the home; two sons, Alan Turnbow and his wife Debby of The Woodlands, TX, and Jeff Turnbow and his wife Melodie of Enid; two brothers, Carl Turnbow and Gerald Turnbow both of Drumright; two sisters, Wanda Hewitt of Yale and Geneva Cronk of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Jason Turnbow and his wife Torry, Brandon Turnbow, Erin Turnbow and Ryan Turnbow; one step-grand-daughter Lindsey Lewis and her husband Major Scott Lewis; two great grandchildren Cassidy and Sloan Turnbow; two step-great-grandchildren, Jordynn and Malorie Lewis; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Duane Turnbow and an infant brother, Roland Eugene Turnbow.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 3, at 11:00 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer of Cushing, with Pastor Marc Duer, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Lutheran Cemetery, south of Cushing on Kings Highway.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer or to the V.F.W., in memory of Leon.
The family will greet friends on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the Floyd Family Center, East of the Funeral Home.
