The Women’s Health Center in Cushing Regional Hospital will be implementing a new program the week of Aug. 8, 2011. The program, Period of Purple Crying will educate parents about soothing their babies with less frustration and to help make the transition into parenthood a little easier. Parents will receive training from a nurse about how to deal with their newborn’s crying and a DVD/Booklet with tips on how to keep both themselves and their baby calm will be given to every family.
The letters in PURPLE stand for:
Peak of Crying
Unexpected
Resists Soothing
Pain-like Face
Long Lasting
Evening
The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome is asking the public to take an easy online pledge, promising to talk to anyone who cares for a baby about the Period of Purple Crying, a stage in the first few months of life when even normal, perfectly healthy babies can cry for up to five hours per day. The pledge is available at https://www.purplecrying.info/pledges/index.php?
The nursery at Cushing Regional Hospital will replace pink and blue hats with purple hats for all babies born August 8-15th to remind everyone of the normalcy of newborn crying in early infancy.
If you need guidance on how to deal with your crying baby, you can contact the 24-hour Parent
