(Stillwater, Okla.) – A 23-year-old Perkins man — who was found hiding in a women’s restroom by Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Myers after trying to escape from the Payne County Courthouse when a judge revoked his bail last week — has been jailed without bond pending his July 17 sentencing on four felony cases.
Payne County Associate District Judge Stephen Kistler ordered Carl William Wilson Jr. into custody on May 16 for failing to undergo a background report before his sentencing on aggravated drunk driving, grand larceny, unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute charges, court records show.
“Carl had failed to report for his LSI (background report). Judge Kistler ordered him back to jail. He told Carl to sit in the jury box. Carl did not do as ordered by the court and walked out of the courtroom.
“He walked partway down the hallway and began running. He ran from the third floor, down the stairs all the way to the first floor. He attempted to exit the east doors on the first floor, yet they were locked. He then ran to the west doors on the first floor attempting to leave, yet they were also locked. He then went into the women’s bathroom on the first floor.
“Upon learning that Carl had run from the courtroom, I locked the public entrance/exit. I learned from witnesses that Carl had gone into the women’s bathroom and had not come out,” Myers wrote in an affidavit filed this week.
“I entered the bathroom and located Carl locked in the last toilet stall. After numerous orders, Carl finally unlocked the bathroom stall. I used verbal commands and instructed him to lay down on his stomach and place his hands behind his back. He complied and I was able to place him in handcuffs,” Myers wrote in his affidavit.
“Once in the hallway of the first floor, Carl attempted to pull away from my grasp. He physically resisted my escort until we reached the jail,” Myers wrote in his affidavit.
If convicted of his latest charge of attempted to escape from detention in the Payne County Jail after a prior felony conviction, Wilson could be given a 10-year prison term and a $10,000 fine. If convicted of resisting arrest, Wilson could be given a one-year jail term and a $500 fine.
When Wilson pleaded guilty three months ago to possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute in Stillwater on Oct. 24, 2017, he was originally freed on $15,000 bail pending his sentencing at which he could receive five years to life in prison plus a maximum fine of $100,000.
When Wilson pleaded guilty last year to aggravated drunk driving with a blood alcohol level of .20, which is two and one-half times the legal limit, at Third and Lowrey Streets in Stillwater on March 11, 2017, he was given a five-year suspended sentence with an order to enroll in and complete the Payne County Drug Court program, but he tested positive for drugs three times this year, court records show. Three months ago, when he admitted he had violated his probation, Wilson was originally freed on $5,000 bail pending his sentencing at which he could receive a five-year prison term and $5,000 fine.
Wilson has also been scheduled for sentencing on July 17 for grand larceny in 2015 and unauthorized use of a vehicle in 2013, court records show.
