(Cushing, Okla.) The Cushing Chamber of Commerce Business After School honoring March recipients was held on Monday, March 27, 2017. Business After School is a Chamber program that honors Cushing’s education community.
Each month, one educator, one support staff and two high school seniors are honored. A reception is held at 4 p.m. in the Cushing Chamber of Commerce board room the last Monday of each school month (with the exception of September and December). Receptions are open to the public.
Those honored for the month of January were: Skyla Vaughan, CHS senior, Ben Stokes, CHS senior, Richard Koble, support staff, Sharen Smith, teacher.
A little bit about the honorees:
Teacher of the month is Sharen Smith. Sharen has one son, Aidan who attends CUE. Sharen has been teaching 16 years in Cushing. Her hobbies include singing, drawing, writing and cooking. She is also the managing editor for Okie Charmed Magazine and enjoys writing for them. Her favorite food is grilled steak. Sharen loves to travel and would love to go to Europe – especially Italy and France to see all the museums and landmarks. Sharen also attends Hope Church where she sings and is a part of their praise and worship team. The greatest joy for her as a teacher is seeing her students succeed in life after they leave the classroom. “That makes me so happy when they live fruitful lives.”
Richard Koble is the support staff of the month. He enjoys working on and driving classic cars. His favorite food is Mexican. Richard is also the groundskeeper at Cushing Christian Church. The greatest joy in each job is “making the place shine.”
Skyla Vaughan, CHS senior, is the daughter of Eric and Destiny Vaughan. She has three siblings; Bianca, Jordyn and Cole. Skyla is the nursery worker at First Christian Church. Her special interests include being involved in CHS for all four years of high school and being the captain this year. She actively works with young cheerleaders. In her free time, she likes to volunteer, spend time with her family and be with her friends. If she could spend the day with someone, it would be Marilyn Monroe because she had so much self confidence, which is something she would love to ask her about. Her favorite food is grilled cheese. Something she says she’s very good at is math. In five years, she hopes to be working toward her pharmacy degree at SWOSU.
Ben Stokes, CHS senior, is the eldest son of John and Heather. He has a younger brother Brady and sister, Brenlea. His hobbies include golf, basketball, watching sports, snow skiing and watching the news. Ben is involved in community activities such as Cushing Pride, the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, GRDA Cushing Vision Planning, Community Foodbank, Meals on Wheels Delivery and he attends Hope Church. In his free time, Ben likes to spend time with family and friends. His favorite food is breakfast. If he could spend the day with anyone, it would be his grandfather, Red Stokes. Ben said, “In five years, I’m sure I will still be at OU furthering my education.”
