Veterans and citizens alike came out to celebrate the 90th birthday of the American Legion.

A celebration was held at American Legion Post 108 Monday to honor the institution known as the American Legion.

Born in Paris, France in 1919, the American Legion has a great legacy of supporting veterans, mentoring youth and Americanism.

Citations were read by Cushing’s Mayor John Henckel, Representative Lee Denney and according to Post 108 Commander Jim Hunter, another citation was given to the Legion by Governor Henry.

“He told me he’d be here in person,” Hunter said with a smile.

Hunter and his fellow Legion members went all out for Monday’s celebration with a 21 gun salute, Taps and even the haunting sound of bagpipes in honor of the beloved “colors” and all veterans – the ones who have fallen, the ones who are fighting and the ones who still remember.

“It’s a great day,” said Lee Denney.

American Legion Post 108, Cushing was one of the first posts in the state and will celebrate its 90th birthday in November.
