(Drumright, Okla) — The Drumright Tornadoes Baseball team is co-champion in the Frisco conferences sharing the title with Kiefer. In conferences, you play one team at their place, then at yours for 2 straight dates. Sometimes it’s the other way around. Kiefer won a game on Monday at Kiefer 6 to 5 in a game that the Tornadoes were ahead in the game until late in the game. On Tuesday big defensive plays were made by shortstop Sam Doty, second baseman Braydon Kelley, first baseman Cale Hollabough, left fielder Will Bruce, and catcher; Hunter Kirby and Nick Worthy at third. Kirby had a big hit in the game. Other hits were by Brayden Kelley and Sterling Winslow. The Tornadoes had 7 players walk and another was hit by a pitch. Kiefer threw a lot of breaking pitches, they seemed determined not to let Drumright hit the long ball. The Tornadoes won 6-4. Trevor Jones pitched a very good game, striking out 8 batters – striking out 3 batters in the 5th inning to get out of a jam.
Earlier in the season the Tornadoes beat Carney 16-0, 4-0 and 11-2.
Coach Blake Flewellen likes to get the Tornadoes in some tough tournaments so they went to Beggs tournament and the Wagoner tournament and played 3A and 4A and 5A teams. It toughens the Tornadoes up. Some of the teams were Kellyville, Coweta, NOAH, a stacked home school team, Checotah and Bristow.
Other team members are Isaiah Chowdhury who has a lot of speed and made a good defensive play in centerfield against Kiefer, Brayden McCormick, Lubbock Baker, Henry Scott, Anthony Riebburg, Micah Bridgeman and A.J. Carl.
In an earlier conference game the Tornadoes played Depew at Drumright and won 5-4 in a tight one. Nick Worthy and Hunter Kirby pitched in that one. Worthy struck out 6 batters and Kirby struck out 4 batters. It was 4-4 but Sam Doty was hit by a pitch with no outs and the bases loaded to bring in the winning run.
The Tornadoes also beat Olive 14-1 and 11-0 in conference games. Helping coach the team have been Bret Flewellen, Scott “Gator” Kelley and Mike Ledgerwood.
The Tornadoes won three District beating Mounds 5-4 and 17-12 at Mounds. It wasn’t pretty but the Tornadoes pounded out 18 hits in the second game. Hunter Kirby was 4 for 4 with 1 RBI, Trevor Jones 4 for 5 with 1 RBI, Will Bruce 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, Nick Worthy 1 for 3. Isaiah Chowdhury 1 for 3, Cale
Hollabaugh batted once and was hit by the pitch. Sam Doty, Hunter Kirby, Nick Worthy and Brayden Kelley were the pitchers in the 2 games. Bret Flewellen, Scott Hollabaugh and Scott “Gator” Kelley were the coaches.
Next up – the Tornadoes will play Regionals against Rejoice Christian.
