(Yukon, Okla.) The Cushing Lady Tigers lost in the consolation game of the area II tournament and also lost a bid for the state tournament Saturday night against the Oklahoma City Douglass Trojans 52-40. This was a game filled with a ton of emotion from the start. A game that the Cushing players and coaches wanted to win in the worst way. But the shots just wouldn't fall for the Lady Tigers and the officiating didn't exactly go how the coaches or the fans would've liked.
Cushing's final record for the season is 24-4 overall and finishes in the top ten in class 4-A. Cushing's Che'Ron Lewis, finished the night with 21 points and 20 rebounds and ends her season with 508 points on the season and remains in the top spot as scoring leader in class 4A. And that's where you would think this story would end, but it doesn't.
After the game I, as the voice of the Tigers, get to see how emotional games can be, on the players, fans, and parents. But after this game, and after the team loaded the bus. This sports reporter was an eye witness to the immense amount of emotion and heart break the Lady Tigers were going through. How the felt like failures after so much hard work during the season. Everyone was weeping from fans, coaches, players, and yes, even the sports guy.
Cushing's team did finally get on the road and returned home safely, but remember as they return, don't think of them as failures, think of it as growing pains, because next year Cushing returns all but one of the Lady Tiger Basketball team. And we'll be better, stronger, and more dangerous.
I have had more people come up to me afterwards and thank me for broadcasting the games during the season. How a certain loved one wasn't able to go to the game and heard the game by myself and KUSH bringing it to you. This isn't just a job to me, this is my love, my passion, this is my team, and for KUSH... our team. We were raised here in Cushing and have loved Cushing athletics from the start. For we are TIGERS! This is our team! GO TIGERS!
